Description
The calabash is a climbing plant that bears a mixture of gourds of various bottle-like shapes. They can be harvested at a size of 20 – 40 cm. Their impressive flowers exude an intense fragrance. The large, woody fruits can be made into tableware, toys, sound boxes, birdhouses and other utensils. They harden over winter when stored in a warm, dry place. If there are signs of mold growth during storage, the top layer of skin should be scraped off and the calabash dried as quickly as possible. The plant is specially bred for unfavorable climates and is well suited for greening fences as a wind and privacy screen.
