Description

Abyssinian cabbage (Brassica carinata)
A lovely, nutty addition to salads. Young leaves can also be steamed gently. Flavor is reminiscent of broccoli. Easy to grow.

Green and purple leaves.
Will grow in planters, pots, and on the balcony. Seeding dates: March-Sept., or anytime if grown indoors.  

Location requirements

Low demands on soil and fertilization. Adapted to heat and drought. In dry conditions it should be well hoed and watered to prevent premature flowering.

Sowing

March – September, on the windowsill all year round. Sowing depth: approx. 1 cm.

Germination

from 3 ° C (opt. 12-22 °C), 8 – 10 days.

Plantation

Select several staggered sowing dates to extend the harvest period. Early seeds can be covered with fleece or perforated film. Damage can be caused by soil fleas and shiny beetles. The plant is not very susceptible to disease. In dry conditions, the plants should be well hoed and watered to prevent premature flowering.

Distances

Row spacing 25 cm. Separate to 2 – 5 cm.

Harvest

Stems and leaves after 5 – 7 weeks from a height of 15 – 20 cm.
